Barclay, Robert

Barclay, Robert
(1648–90)
   Theologian.
A Scotsman, Barclay was educated in Paris. He joined the Society of Friends (Quakers) in 1667. He was the author of several works of Quaker theology, including A Catechism and Confession of Faith, the Anarchy of the Ranters and An Apology for the True Christian Religion, being as Explanation and Vindication of the People Called Quakers. He was imprisoned on several occasions for his convictions, but in 1677 he became a favourite of the Duke of York, who was to become King James II. As a result of his influence, the colony of East New Jersey in America was handed over to the Friends as a refuge from persecution. Barclay himself was appointed Governor, although he never crossed the Atlantic Ocean. He is chiefly remembered for his pacifist ideals, which have remained an important hallmark of the Society.
